The game's popularity has led straight to labels such as "Halo clone" and "Halo killer", applied respectively to games either like or anticipated to be better than it. In Halo's twenty-sixth century setting, the player assumes the role of the Master Chief, a cybernetically augmented "SPARTAN" super-soldier. The player is accompanied by Cortana, a synthetic intelligence who occupies the Master Chief's neural interface. Players battle numerous aliens on foot and in cars as they attempt to expose the secrets of the eponymous radiance, a ring-shaped structure. The game has been called "easy to learn", and has been feted for its "engaging story".
The player personality is equipped with a damage-absorbing energy shield, in addition to hit points. The shield's charge appears as a blue bar in the upper-right hand corner of the game's heads-up display. When the shield is completely depleted, the player is highly vulnerable, and further damage decreases the character's health level. Critically , however , the shield will recharge if no further damage is sustained for a short period.
