GI Joe is a classic toy for boys just as the Barbie is for the girls. Most boys (and even men!) have had a GI Joe action figure at least once in their lives. GI Joe’s origin started way back in 1942, whose then main aim was to teach values like love for the motherland and pride in defending the nation. It is the perfect toy to inspire American heroism, representing real life national heroes. GI Joe action figures have produced figures like Bob Hope, George Washington, Dwight Eisenhower, Colin Powell, John F. Kennedy, Ernie Pyle, Theodore Roosevelt, to name a few. For so many decades, the GI Joe action figures are a big commercial success.

GI Joes started appearing in the market as 12 inch dolls, the same size of Barbie. In the 1980s, the toy line regained popularity with the launch of ‘GI Joe: A Real American Hero’. The action figures in the line were merely 3 ¾ inches tall with movable arms and legs and also the popular kung fu grip.

• First of all, know what you want to buy. If you like the more classical and older 1980 versions, you can find some of the collectibles online. They may be pricier, though. Be in the know that many of the old versions are reincarnated and reissued by Hasbro. For instance, the Real American Hero line was reissued in honor of the GI Joe 25^th anniversary.
• As much as you can, buy action figures with the original packages. If the original package is no longer available, check if the arms and legs are not damaged. See if the joints are sturdy and its limbs are not glued on.
• Do your shopping online. Online auction web sites such as eBay are a great way to find the action figures. However, be extra careful when dealing with online buyers. Find if it still has the original package, read its description and condition of the action figure carefully. As much as you can, find figures that comes with its accessories, weapons, armors and backpacks.
• New GI Joe toys are not exactly worthless. Check if it’s a limited edition action figure. Moreover, popular action figures may be easily sellable, but sometimes, the least popular action figures are worth even more. These dolls are limited in stocks and sold less, thus they are rare and with higher value.
